NORTHFIELD — The Selectboard voted on July 11 to transfer $22,000 from the Highway Department’s highways, bridges and rails account to cover a deficit in Highway Department wages.
Selectboard Chairman Jack Spanbauer relayed information from Highway Superintendent Tom Walker, explaining the deficit resulted from an unexpected number of overtime hours during winter, cemetery burials and weekend storms, which also involve overtime pay.
“I feel we should approve this, but have Tom come in and speak to residents,” Spanbauer said, hoping to find a way to mitigate wage deficits in the future.
