Just after noon Friday, State Police were notified that Bernardston Police were pursuing a red 2000 Ford Taurus with Connecticut plates. Police said the it was a “vehicle of interest” in several break-ins in Bernardston.

The pursuit headed down Routes 5 and 10 from Bernardston to Greenfield before the car got on Interstate 91 South in Greenfield. Bernardston Police continued the chase as the car exited the interstate in Deerfield.

By the time the car had Whately and then Hatfield, Massachusetts State Police Troopers from various barracks had responded to the chase as well as the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section and a helicopter from the State Police Air Wing.

The car crashed into two other vehicles — a GMC van occupied by a Hatfield couple and a Nissan Rogue SUV driven by a Holyoke woman — just South of Interstate 91 Exit 20 in Northampton. The van and the SUV sustained minor damage but none of the occupants were injured.

The car then swerved into the median before becoming disabled, according to police.

The driver, later identified as 57-year-old Louis Mims, got out of the car and attempted to run, police said. He was apprehended by Trooper Michael Tucker of the State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section.

Mims was turned over to Bernardston Police to be booked.

No troopers or police officers were injured in the chase. Mims was also not injured.
