In reading the feelings of the staff at the Pioneer Valley High School on a recent survey, is disappointing to say the least. With a declining student population, the superintendent has decided to reduce the teaching staff. Understandably so. But why does the annual budget continue to increase? It’s confusing to this writer.
It seems one position that has sparked controversy is that of the dean of students. From this side of the street, it would appear that the two staff members increase in salaries would pay a fair portion of this position. Again $20,000 to $24,000 is a lot of money while others lose their jobs.
Stating that these increases were state mandated on a gender bias basis is bunk. In this case, the school could have done as “Donald Would Do,” abolish the position, restructure duties and post it. How much longer is PVRS going to keep such top heavy staff while draining the pockets of area towns that are strapped for cash?
We hear the same plea all the time “if we don’t pass this budget, programs will have to be cut” … “This budget is for the kids.”
Undoubtedly, students and parents find reasons to choose other schools. Offering great programming and engaging morally healthy staff helps to retain students. Staff decreases do not set well with many.
There must come a time when education really is for the students and not for bloating upper staff member’s wallets.
