The winter season continued for the Greenfield YMCA Tumbling Tigers gymnastics team, which competed over the weekend at the 2017 YMCA Dual State Championships held at the Metro North YMCA in Saugus.

YMCA teams from Massachusetts and New Hampshire competed in the event.

In Level 3 action, Greenfield’s Umi Burns posted a top-10 finish in the vault in the 10-year old grouping, while Lindsey Taylor was second in her age group in every event in the Level 4, 8-and-under group.

In Level 6 action, Greenfield placed fifth as a team with a score of 102.325. Hannah Phillips was third on bars and added a fourth-place showing on beam in 11-and-under action, with Addie Broady tying for third on bars and finishing fourth on vault. Lanie Bowse placed in the top 10 on beam and floor in the 12- and 13-year-old division.

Zenani Himlin-Mayekiso was the runner-up on vault in the Level 7, 12-and-under division as Greenfield was fifth as a team in the level (96.825 points). Allyson Unaitis placed in the top 10 on all events and all-around, with Kendall Fox earning top 10s in the 13-year old division.

Greenfield’s Xcel Platinum team placed second with a score of 97.80, behind only Haverhill’s total of 106.40. Emily Braverman placed fourth on bars to go with top 10s in vault, beam, floor, and all-around. Karma Phillips was a top 10 performer on vault and beam, as was Katie Adams on vault and bars.

The Xcel Gold team placed fifth with a score of 102.55. Leading that side was Josie Cloutier (11-year old and under) with top 10s in all events and the all-around. Cynsi Roy-Clark was the state beam champion (8.8) in the 14-and-up division, while Aneesa Brewer (top 10s in vault, bars, floor) and Bre Garey (runner-up on bars, top 10s in beam and floor) were also solid over the weekend.

Finally, the Greenfield Xcel Silver team placed third with a score of 107.375. Aiden Wall was the 11-and-under state floor champion, posting a score of 9.2 to pace the squad. Wall was also second on beam and all-around in addition to fourth on bars.

Cassie Cloutier placed third on floor along with top 10s in vault, bars, beam, and all-around. Safiya Yaseen was a top-10 finisher on bars, while Margarette Howland placed in the top 10 on vault, beam, and floor.

In 12-and-up competition, Clara Fritz was the state champion on the bar (9.4) and also added top-5 finishes on vault and all-around. Soriya Noeun placed fifth on bars, Phoebe Broussard was third on bars, while Abby Shaw took seventh on bars.

Golf

Junior Golf League back

For the second season, Country Club of Greenfield is offering PGA Junior League Golf to boys and girls ages 13 of all abilities, and registration is now open. Parents can visit PGAJLG.com to learn more. Registration will close May 1.

Teams play in a two-person scramble format for competition, which reinforces the team concept and allows captains to substitute players to ensure everyone on the team can participate. Parents are encouraged to play an active role as volunteers, spectators or coaches, making it a fun activity for the whole family.

Cost is $150 and includes a team jersey, bag tag, T-shirt, six practices and six matches. Boys and girls of all abilities, ages 7 through 13, are invited to register. No prior golf experience is necessary to participate.

DA softball rolls

For the second time in as many games, the Deerfield Academy softball team rolled to a victory on Monday afternoon. The host Big Green (2-1) had little trouble dispatching of Stoneleigh-Burnham School in a 13-0 home win.

Deerfield rec team

Registrations are now open for the Union 38 grades 7 through 9 recreational softball team. The team is for players in Deerfield, Conway, Whately and Sunderland.

Union 38 is in the Quabbin Valley league, which includes: Belchertown, Ware, Monson, Palmer, South Hadley, Chicopee and Frontier. Games begin the weekend of May 20 and the season with playoffs will end by June 25. There is usually one weeknight game and at least one game on the weekends.

The cost is $60 and the deadline to register is April 14. Registration forms are available online at www.deerfieldma.us.

The team will play its games at Merritt Field and practices will be at Merritt and/or Sugarloaf depending on coaches schedules and field availability. If you are interested in playing, please contact Sue Antonellis in Deerfield or Jim Ewen in Sunderland.

Road racing

Race to End Child Abuse 5K

The Race to End Child Abuse 5K run/walk will take place on April 22 at The Children’s Advocacy Center at 56 Wisdom Way in Greenfield. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m.

There is no registration for the race but donations for the Children’s Advocacy Center will be accepted. The race will be officially timed, with homemade cookies and water waiting for you at the end.
