GREENFIELD — A 50-year-old Palmer man was arrested on drunken and drugged driving charges after police say he ran a red light in front of a cruiser.
Eric A. Humphrey was arraigned in Greenfield District Court Tuesday on charges of operating under the influence of liquor and drugs — both for a second offense — possessing an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, possessing an open container of marijuana in a vehicle and failure to stop.
According to a report by Greenfield Police Officer Cody Guilbault, Humphrey took an illegal right on red at the intersection of Federal and Main streets late Saturday afternoon, turning in front of Guilbault’s cruiser. Guilbault wrote that after he activated his blue lights, Humphrey slowed down but continued driving on Main Street, turning onto Chapman Street and coming to a complete stop a quarter-mile later.
Guilbault noted that Humphrey appeared lethargic and pale, spoke with slurred speech and had red, glassy eyes. A marijuana grinder and pipe were visible in the vehicle’s cup holder, and Humphrey told police he last smoked about two hours earlier, but denied drinking any alcohol, according to the report.
A series of field sobriety tests indicated impairment, and Humphrey was arrested. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police found two full nips of vodka, an open nip of vodka and another marijuana pipe. Officer Michael Mcdowell located a small container of marijuana in Humphrey’s pocket, according to the report.
Humphrey refused a breath test during booking, resulting in an automatic license suspension.
He was released on personal recognizance following his arraignment and is due back in court May 1 for a pretrial conference.
