Army scored the first six goals Saturday and went on to defeat UMass, 9-2, in the men’s lacrosse season opener in front of 602 fans at Garber Field in Amherst.

Matthew Donovan, Cole Johnson and David Symmes each scored twice in the first half to build a 6-0 lead for Army. Gianni Bianchin scored 3 minutes, 14 seconds before halftime on an assist from Jeffrey Trainor to send UMass into the break down 6-1. Army tacked on a pair of third-quarter goals before the team’s traded goals in the fourth, including Dan Muller’s tally for the Minutemen.

D.J. Smith stopped a career-high 12 shots in the UMass loss.

UMass heads to Ohio State Saturday at noon.

UMass hockey falls

UMass-Lowell scored twce in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and defeat UMass-Amherst, 4-2, in a Hockey East game Saturday night at Tsongas Arena in Lowell.

Lowell’s Joe Gambardella scored 11:07 into the third period to break the 2-2 tie when he pushed a puck over the goal line following a save by UMass goalie Alex Wakaluk, who made 35 saves for UMass in his first start of the season. The ninth-ranked River Hawks added an insurance tally on a five-minute power play three minutes later, when Connor Wilson scored on a one-timer.

Dylan Zink opened the scoring for the River Hawks (19-9-3) when he came out of the penalty box and scored 12:30 into the first period. The Minutemen (5-23-2) answered 1:18 later as Niko Hildenbrand stuffed a puck underneath UMass-Lowell goalie Tyler Wall, with Ray Pigozzi and Steven Iacobellis picking up the assists.

Michael Kapla gave UMass-Lowell a 2-1 lead 9:30 into the second period, but UMass answered again when Jack Suter flipped a shot over Wall late in the second period on assists from Callum Fryer and Joseph Widmar.

UMass-Lowell held a 39-18 edge in shots and went 2-for-4 on the power play, while UMass-Amherst finished 0-for-3 on the man-advantage.

UMass hosts Merrimack Tuesday night at 7 at the Mullins Center in Amherst.

Squash

Baldwin School handed Deerfield Academy its first squash loss of the season, 4-3, during the United States Squash National semifinals over the weekend.

Deerfield defeated Phillips Exeter Academy (7-0) and Lawrenceville School (7-0) in the first two rounds of the tournament.

• On the boys’ side, Deerfield went 0-2 at the U.S. Nationals, falling to defending champion Brunswick School (7-0) and Hotchkiss School (5-2).

Swimming

The Deerfield boys’ and girls’ swimming and diving teams won Saturday.

The boys earned a 101-79 win over Hotchkiss School. The girls picked up a 142-44 win over Hotchkiss.

Wrestling

Deerfield wrestler Henry Hayden won a pair of matches by pin and became the 2017 Class A wrestling champion in the 106-pound weight class over the weekend.

The Deerfield team finished fifth.

Basketball

The Deerfield boys’ and girls’ basketball teams lost Saturday.

The boys’ team suffered a 62-37 loss to Exeter. The girls’ team suffered an 86-65 loss to Loomis Chaffee School.

Hockey

Deerfield defeated Berkshire School, 4-1, in a girls’ prep hockey game over the weekend in Deerfield.

• On the boys’ side, Deerfield suffered a 3-2 loss to Avon Old Farms School.
