Issak Reinikainen scored 12 third quarter points and tallied 21 points on the night as Mahar Regional School pulled away to a 59-42 win over Greenfield High School in a Hampshire League boys’ basketball game Friday night in Greenfield.
The Senators (13-1, 10-1 HL) played well on offense to start the game, jumping out to a 20-9 lead after the first quarter. The Green Wave tried to battle back in the second but the Senators used a third quarter run on the back of Reinikainen to pull away for the win.
“Mahar played really well tonight on both ends of the floor,” said Greenfield head coach Tim Caplice. “They made their open shots to start the game and we tried to battle back but they had a big run coming out of halftime and we just never recovered.”
Bryce Cleveland added 12 points for Mahar while Quinn Gervais added 10.
Kevin Mendez was the high scorer for Greenfield (5-9, 5-6) finishing with 11 and Adam Phelps added 9.
Turners Falls 77, Smith Academy 49 — Tionne Brown recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 assists to lead Turners Falls High School to a 77-49 rout over Smith Academy in a Hampshire League boys’ basketball game Friday night in Turners Falls.
Javoni Williams grabbed 8 boards and added five points for Turners Falls (10-4, 6-4 HL) and James Vaughn was the high-scorer for the Indians with 14.
Nick Leary was the leading scorer for the Falcons registering 17 points
With the win Turners Falls officially qualifies for postseason play and the Indians will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to face Frontier Regional School.
Frontier 69, Athol 34 — Brandyn Robinson scored a career-high 11 points on Friday and Frontier Regional School defeated Athol High School, 69-34, in a HL boys’ basketball game at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.
The Red Hawks led 25-7 after the first quarter and never looked back.
Myles Freeman, Jacob Meier and Luke Parsons each tossed in 8 points for Frontier, while Ben Lowe and Carsten Carey each had 6.
Angel Rivera led Athol with 9 points, and Evan Saisa added 8.
Pioneer 67, Mohawk 36 — Tucker Llewelyn scored 29 points, knocking down two 3-pointers to lead Pioneer Valley Regional School to a 67-36 win over Mohawk Trail Regional High School in Hampshire League boys’ basketball action Friday night in Buckland.
Brendan Emond added 11 points for Pioneer (10-4, 8-2 HL) and Mike Menard added 8 as the Panthers clinched a postseason berth.
Ian Eckler led the way for Mohawk (4-11, 4-8 HL) recording 9 points while Chris Graces and Torsten Sloan-Anderson each finished with 7.
Mahar 54, Easthampton 18 — Kenzie Tenney scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Mahar Regional School to a 54-18 win over Easthampton High School in Franklin County League girls’ basketball action Friday night in Easthampton.
Cassie Verheyen also played well for the Senators (9-5, 4-0 FCL) finishing with 6 points and 11 rebounds, while Kadie Jillson and Hannah Paul each tallied six points apiece.
Karina Volpe, Lauren Copeland, Rachel Robinson and Lisa Sikop each scored 4 points for the Eagles.
