Franklin County Technical School got off to a fast start and moved one step closer to a Suburban League wrestling title by knocking off Hampshire Regional High School, 48-15, Wednesday night during Senior Night in Turners Falls.

The Eagles picked up pins in the first four matches of the day and added a forfeit in the next one to take an early 30-0 lead.

Peter Saladino got things started at 106 pounds by pinning Nathaniel Picard in 1 minute, 4 seconds, and Kyle Brunelle followed that up at 113 pounds by pinning Cam Neary in 35 seconds. Colin Pettis earned a pin over Luke Enright in 24 seconds at 120 pounds, and Skyler Rouse earned a pin in 22 seconds at 126 pounds over Bryce Illingsworth.

“The kids in the lower weight classes wrestled particularly well and set the tone for the match,” Franklin Tech coach Joe Gamache said.

Jaden Sadlowski (132 pounds), Brody Wood (170) and Caileb Milton (182) each picked up forfeits for the Eagles. Mike Mattson pinned Tallon Garelli in 23 seconds at 285 pounds.

Franklin Tech will be wrestling for outright possession of the league title when it travels to Sabis International Charter School on Wednesday. The Eagles first have the State Vocational Tournament on Saturday.

Athol 51, South Hadley 18 — Three Athol High School wrestlers administered pins in 30 seconds or less on Wednesday night and the Red Raiders remained unbeaten in Franklin County League wrestling action with a 51-18 victory over South Hadley High School in Athol.

Mike Grey had the quickest pin of the night for the Red Raiders (3-0-1 TCL) when he needed just 15 seconds to pin Eli Pietrzykowski at 152 pounds. Derek Erali took just 23 seconds to pin Matt O’Brien at 145 pounds, and Joe Grey stopped Alex Schenker at the 30-second mark at 138 pounds for his pin.

Chris Waslaske was the fourth Red Raider to earn a first-period pin when he got Jeremy Rodriguez 1:24 into the match at 170. Merrick Decker pinned Jody Solzak 2:19 into the bout at 126, and Caleb Cox earned a pin at 3:21 over Zabe Solivan at 120 pounds. Trevor Mousseau earned the seventh pin of the day at 195 pounds when he got Jocey Rondeau two seconds before the bout ended.

Ryan White earned three points for the Raiders with a 7-4 decision over Gino Vinmare at 132 pounds, and Jon Mahony got a forfeit at 106 pounds.

Mahar 51, Frontier 24 — Mahar Regional School won 10 of the 14 matches on Wednesday night and set up a showdown with Athol High School for the Tri-County League crown next week with a 51-24 victory over Frontier Regional School in Orange.

The Senators are now 4-0 in the league and will travel to Athol on Wednesday at 7 for a battle of league unbeatens with the TCL championship hanging in the balance.

Mahar earned five pins, two forfeits and won three decisions on the night. Chris Vezina pinned Jordan McDonough in 38 seconds at 113 pounds for the Senators, and Henry Ndayisaba stuck Bailey Murry in 38 seconds at 120 pounds. Adam Clement earned a pin in 4:35 over Ito McMillan at 132, and Peter Tattan pinned Andrew Logan in 2:28 at 160. The final pin of the night for Mahar came at 285 where Brandon Burke stuck Jackie Phoy in 1:27.

Miller Richardson earned an 8-2 win over Josiah Murry at 145 pounds, Jonathan Oakes beat Nate Austin, 6-2, at 152 pounds, and Chad Marcoux earned a 7-1 win over Joey Hildreth at 182. Ben Gilmore (170) and Matt Herk (220) each picked up pins for the Senators.

Four Frontier wrestlers won by pin. Tanner Finch earned a 33-second pin over Robert Watkins at 106 pounds, and Avery Tuttle stuck Gareth Gordon-Halpern in 2:33 at 126 pounds. Connor Pettis picked up a pin at 138 pounds when he overtook Todd Chaisson at the 4:20 mark, and Miguel Olivera beat Seth Williams in 1:01 at 195 pounds.

Hockey

Easthampton 4, Greenfield 1 — Greenfield High School was dealt a crushing blow to its postseason hopes on Wednedsay night with a 4-1 loss to Easthampton High School in a Fay-Wright Division hockey game at Lossone Rink in Easthampton.

The Green Wave (4-7-2) needs every point it can get this time of year in order to qualify for the postseason, and took on an Easthampton (3-8-1) team that was one of two teams below the Wave in the Fay-Wright standings.

The Eagles scored twice in the first period and then scored twice in the third, while the Green Wave scored in the second period.

Mike McColgan and Matt Grimaldi scored in the first period to put the Eagles up 2-0, but Tyler Townsley came back and scored for the Green Wave in the second on an assist from Evan Simmons.

Easthampton put the game away in the third period with two goals — one from Matt Skowronek and the other from Garren Fugiel.

Nate Barnes stopped 19 shots in the win. Riley Drew made 24 saves in the loss.
