Winter Carnival: Save the date for the 2016 Winter Carnival, February 3 to 5: Arctic Blast! A weekend full of activities is sure to warm the spirit of the entire community. Kicking off the weekend is live downtown ice carving, the Parade of Lights, followed by Fireworks bursting over the iconic Poet Seat Tower. The fun continues throughout the weekend with a Family Fun Fest, Sleigh Bell Run, cribbage tournament, Breakfast with Olaf, Cardboard Sled Race, K9 Keg Pull, Chili Cook-Off, and much much more! Winter Carnival Family Fun Fest: Join the Recreation Department for a day full of family fun, Saturday, Feb. 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Youth Center, 20 Sanderson St. Events include a Lego contest, educational and interactive animal presentation, Art Exhibit, Face Painting, Crafts, Games, and a showing of Norm of the North! Suggested donation of $5 per person or $20 per family.
Winter Carnival Breakfast with Olaf: Enjoy breakfast on Sunday, Feb. 5 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the 99 Restaurant with Olaf, the snowman. $6 per person; 10 and under $4. Two years and under free. Bring your family and friends to help support Greenfield Winter Carnival. Tickets available at the door. Cash or check only.
Winter Carnival K9 Keg Pull: Run, dance, do whatever it takes to urge your dog across the finish line. Dogs of all shapes and sizes will sprint for glory pulling appropriately sized “kegs”: For a Chihuahua, that’s a beer can, while mighty rotts or shepherds pull full-size kegs (all empty.) Register online in advance for $5; $10 day of with funds benefiting the Paws Park Initiative.
Winter Carnival Parade of Lights: Help the Greenfield Recreation Department light up the night and kick-off Winter Carnival right by entering a vehicle into the 3rd Annual Parade of Lights on Friday, Feb. 3. Decorated vehicles will travel from Newton School, along Main Street, down Federal Street, on to Beacon Street, and ending on Gerrett Street at Beacon Field. Prizes awarded for Best and Brightest, Artistic Illumination, and Town Council Award. More information available on the website. Registration is required.
Winter Carnival Sleigh Bell Run: Registration is open for the Winter Carnival Sleigh Bell Run, a 4 Mile Road Race through a scenic course starting on Hope Street and running through the Highland Park area. Race will be Saturday, Feb. 4 at 10 a.m. Pre-register at Recreation Department or Town Hall or day of race at Hope & Olive Restaurant from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. Prizes awarded for multiple age divisions. First 75 entrants receive t-shirt and sleigh bell bracelets. $20 Pre-race entry by Friday, Jan. 20, $25 after this date and on race day. Youth under the age of 18 are half price.
February Vacation Week: Sign up today for a fun filled week of activities, games, and outdoor fun for your child grades K-7. This program is held at the Youth Center on 20 Sanderson St., from Tuesday, Feb. 21 through Friday, Feb. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Early Care available from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and late care from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Walking fieldtrips to Beacon Field for sledding, skating, and snow fun! Lunch, afternoon snack, and drink must be sent with child. Morning snack provided. Children also must bring appropriate winter clothing (boots, hats, gloves, etc). Your registration also includes your child’s participation in the Community Kids Bringing Art to the Heart of Greenfield program. Registration deadline is February 3; $100 residents, $125 non-residents.
