ORANGE — The Wheeler Memorial Library invites families to join in celebrating the sixth annual Take Your Child to the Library Day on Feb. 4.
The library has planned three hours of activities designed to spark children’s creativity, support early literacy, and give families an occasion to play and learn together. Take Your Child to the Library Day was launched in 2011 as a grassroots literacy project by two Connecticut librarians and has become an international celebration encouraging families everywhere to take their children to their local libraries.
The day’s programs include a storytime for toddlers and preschoolers at 10:30 a.m., an egg-carton bookworm creation craft at 11:15 a.m., and a LEGO building session at 12:30 p.m. An all-day StoryWalk and picture book giveaway have also been organized in cooperation with Jen Aldrich from Valuing Our Children.
The StoryWalk will take families on a tour of the library as they follow the adventures of a young writer in the children’s picture book “One Day, The End: Short, Very Short, Shorter-than-Ever Stories” by Rebecca Kai Dotlich. A free copy of local author Astrid Sheckles’ book “Hector Fox and the Giant Quest” will be given to each child who describes what they love about libraries on a blank bookmark. Books will also be given away at the Moore-Leland Library in North Orange from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

WENDELL — Leah Moses has two separate bodies of work, “Breathing Room” and “Affectionate Tendrils,” displayed until the end of February at the Wendell Free Library.
“Breathing Room” is a series of 18 small- to medium-scale watercolor paintings exhibited in the Herrick Room. Moses credits her earlier days spent under brilliant coastal skies as the source of inspiration for this series. The majority of the watercolors are circular forms — linen stretched over embroidery hoops. There are four rectangular pieces, also on linen. Each canvas reflects the tone of a minimalist landscape, composed of two to three separate color fields.
“Affectionate Tendrils” is a series of three-dimensional works on display in the glass case greeting patrons in the library’s main lobby. With each piece Moses experiments with shape and texture. It is a collection of small multi-media sculptures done with clay, wood, glass, linen cotton, moss, sand and stone.
ATHOL — According to Athol Town Manager Shaun A. Suhoski, the new sign at the Lake Ellis boat ramp that was donated by members of the Lake Ellis Association has been installed.
The sign includes information about invasive weed control protocols and lists the town’s rules and regulations concerning use.
