The Recorder published an extremely hurtful and biased letter, “Reconsider Hunting,” which criticized a young man and his family for hunting. On the editorial page, it is the paper’s responsibility to carefully choose letters that are both topical yet not personally harmful. You have failed on both counts.

I have known this family for over 60 years, from grandfather to teenage sons. They carry on a long tradition of careful hunting, shooting only to make a clean kill and utilizing the deer to the full extent possible.

As a non-hunter, myself, I have great admiration for the skill and perseverance that is required to scout out, carefully chose a shot, and harvest a deer. I envy those who can participate with friends, father and sons, mothers and daughters in a tradition that is both honorable and an important part of nature itself.

Yes, man is a part of nature and a predator. I manage my 85 acres in Orange for wildlife habitat while encouraging hunting. There is no conflict. Hunters have contributed more than any other single group to land protection efforts.

You have published a hurtful letter that serves no good purpose. Her letter was biased, unfeeling and serves no useful purpose. The real question is: Why would The Recorder publish such a hurtful letter and not acknowledge the biased source? Please use better judgment in the future.
