Dublin School used its edge in height to dominate on the boards on Friday afternoon and went on to defeat Four Rivers Charter School, 55-39, in a River Valley Athletic League boys’ basketball game at Indoor Action Sports in Greenfield.

Dublin’s ability to rebound helped the team to a 31-18 lead at halftime. Four Rivers made a run in the second half and cut the deficit down to 8 points at one point, but that was as close as the Otters were able to get.

“They were big and athletic,” Four Rivers coach Alex Wilson said. “They were getting two, three or four shots. We had a hard time rebounding.”

Oscar Gibson led Four Rivers with 18 points, and Marcel Pattavina added 11. Mac Almeida finished with 4 points, Milou Rigollaud had 3 points, and Kin Wildman-Hanlon added 2 points

Four Rivers is now 4-2 on the season, while Dublin improved to 2-0 in the RVAL.

Girls’ hoop

Turners Falls 40, Ware 39 — Kylie Fleming scored 12 points including a pair of late free throws to give Turners Falls High School the lead and the hosts survived a pair of late free throws by Ware High School to earn a hard-fought, 40-39, win in an independent girls’ basketball game Friday night in Turners Falls.

Fleming went to the free throw line with 29 seconds left and her team trailing by a point (39-38) but she hit both shots to give the host Indians (5-4) a lead. That helped Fleming finish with her team-high dozen points, as she went 5-of-6 from the free throw line on the night, and also pulled down 7 boards.

Turners Falls nearly gave the lead away, with a pair of late turnovers, and then a foul with 1.2 seconds left on a Ware inbounds play that sent Shannon Tweedie to the free throw line with a chance to tie or win the game. Tweedie missed the first shot, and Turners Falls coach Ted Wilcox took a timeout before the second to give the Ware shooter a little longer to think about it. The move paid off, as Tweedie missed the second shot as well, and time expired.

Turners Falls had to climb back into the game after it trailed 24-17 at halftime. The run came in the third quarter as Turners outscored Ware, 14-5 to take a lead into the fourth. Fleming, Maddy Chmyzinski and Aliyah Sanders each hit 3-pointers in the third quarter, and the host Indians shot 5-of-6 from the line in the frame to account for all the scoring.

“We came out in the third quarter and played really well,” Wilcox said. “I give the girls a lot of credit, they gutted it out. They came out in the third quarter with a lot of energy.”

Chmyzinski finished with 10 points in the win, and Sanders had 7 points and 6 steals. Chloe Ellis added 7 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.

Jordan Halgas led all scorers with 16 points in the loss, and Michelle Zawalski added 15 points.

Monson 40, Frontier 39 — Monson High School came back from a late four-point deficit to get past Frontier Regional School, 40-39, in an independent girls’ basketball game Friday night at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.

The Red Hawks (3-5) held a four-point lead with 1 minute, 30 seconds left in the game but turnovers finally caught up to them. Frontier finished with 25 turnovers in the loss, as the woes continued for a team that has struggled with ball-control. Coach Marty Sanderson said the team is improving, but still has some work to do.

“We made strides tonight,” he began. “We played better basketball, but unfortunately, when you shoot yourself in the foot as many times as we do during, it’s tough to win basketball games. We make too many unforced errors with the ball and miss too many easy shots.”

Bryanna Murphy led Monson with 13 points.

Ella Deane paced all scorers with 15 points in the loss, and Helena Diaz tossed in 7. Lisa Portier chipped in with 2 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, and Ashley Walker notched 5 points.
