Brad Mish led a field of 157 runners across the finish line during the annual Sawmill River 10K Road Race Saturday in Montague.

Mish, from Hadley, crossed the line in 33 minutes, 24 seconds to win the race. Greenfield’s Laure Van Den Broek was the top female finisher at 43:05.

In the Youth Division, Williamsburg’s Amanda Adams was the top finisher in 51:12, while the top male finisher was Jack Yanko of Amherst in 36:43. Cheryl Cleary of Rutland was the top female finisher in the Master Division (ages 40-49) with Donald Pacher of Florence winning the men’s title in 40:45. JoEllen Cindy White of Westhampton was the top female in the Senior Division (ages 50-59) with a time of 52:28, while Alejandro Heuck of Amherst won the men’s title in 38:41. In the Senior-Plus Division (ages 60 & up), Sidney Letendre of Florence won the women’s crown in 47:48, while Richard Larsen of Shelburne took the men’s title in 42:45.

All proceeds went to benefit the Montague Parks & Recreation Department’s Sponsor-A-Child Scholarship Program.

UMass hockey falls

Minnesota scored three goals on special teams Saturday night to skate past UMass, 4-1, in the championship game of the Mariucci Classic at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.

The 11th-ranked Gophers (11-5-2) finished 2-for-5 on the power play and also netted a shorthanded goal en route to the victory.

Minnesota took a 1-0 lead on an early power play when Tyler Sheehy scored on a 2-on-1 break. UMass (5-13-2) nearly notched the equalizer with an odd-man rush of its own late in the frame, but Ryan Badger had his shot stopped by Minnesota goalie Eric Schierhorn.

The Gophers upped their lead to 2-0 just 5:02 into the second period when Justin Kloos broke in on UMass goalie Ryan Wischow (35 saves) and beat him. UMass got back to within a goal with 7 minutes to play in the second after Jack Suter blocked a shot. The loose puck waspicked up by freshman Jonny Lazarus, who carried it up ice and beat Schierhorn. Minnesota came back just over a minute later to reclaim the two-goal cushion on a goal by Mike Szmatula.

UMass had five power play chances in the third period, including an abbreviated five-minute advantage, but the Minutemen were unable to convert and finished the night 0-for-6 on the power play. Vinni Lettieri completed the scoring for Minnesota with an empty-netter with 37 seconds to play.

Schierhorn stopped 10 shots in the third period and finished with 33 saves in the win.

UMass returns home on Tuesday to face American International College at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center.

Youth hockey

J & J Hockey wins pair

Billy Woodall scored four goals Sunday and the Franklin County Hockey Association J & J Hockey team defeated Brattleboro, 8-5, in a Greater Springfield League Peewee East Division game at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.

Jamison Baleno scored three times in the win, and Roger Grondin Jr. added a shorthanded goal. Ben Carlan had two assists, and Chris Phelps, Sam DeJackome, Jaxon Lavallee and Shea Savage each had one assist. Will Cowie made 25 saves in net.

• On Saturday, Carlan had three goals and one assist to lead J & J Hockey past Ludlow, 7-2, at Smead Arena in Springfield.

Baleno scored twice, and Woodall had a goal and an assist. Dylan Mahar chipped in a goal, while Cooper Bourbeau played well offensively. Ethyn Clayton, Savage and Lavallee each played well defensively, Josh Bordeaux made 13 saves.

FCHA Mites split

Luca Siano scored six times on Sunday but the FCHA Mite Green hockey team suffered a 14-8 loss to Springfield in a GSL Mite Division game.

Chase Zraunig and Carter Schloat each had a goal and an assist in the loss, and Stefan Flaska added one helper. Jack Laurie made 10 saves

On Saturday, Zraunig had three goals and one assist to help FCHA to a 11-3 win over Brattleboro.

Laurie had two goals and an assist, and Cordelia Rhodes and Siano each scored twice. Shawn Bauman and Schloat each had a goal and an assist, and Hayden Ardrey added a helper. Jahleel Perry made 15 saves.

Youth basketball

Pioneer 7/8 cruises

The Pioneer grades 7 and 8 Suburban League basketball team closed out 2016 by keeping its record spotless with a 49-16 victory over Southampton.

Troy Emond paced Pioneer with 18 points. Quinn Grover added 8 points, and Paige Loughman tossed in 6.

Pioneer is now 6-0 on the season.
