Maddy Chmyzinski scored 18 points Wednesday night and Turners Falls High School upended Frontier Regional School, 49-38, in a Franklin County League crossover girls’ basketball game at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.
The Indians (1-3) got off to a strong start and built a 26-14 halftime lead, which was never cut to single digits in the second half, according to Frontier coach Marty Sanderson. The visitors shot 18 of 28 from the free-throw line, while Frontier made just five freebies, something Sanderson said was a credit to the aggressive play put forth by the Indians.
“They were going to the hoop,” he explained. “They played with a little more energy, a little more intensity and a little more purpose.”
The Indians also used a balanced offensive attack. Chmyzinski led all scorers with 18 points and was the only Turners Falls player in double figures, although four others had at least six points. Kylie Fleming finished with 9, Abby Loynd netted 7 and Chloe Ellis and Aliyah Sanders each dumped in 6.
Ella Deane led Frontier (1-2) with 11 points. Helena Diaz scored 9 points, Lisa Portier finished with 8 and Marie Diemand and Kate Hickey each tossed in 5.
Smith Voke 44, FC Tech 41 — Smith Vocational & Agricultural High School had just three players score but they finished in double figures and the Vikings edged Franklin County Technical School, 44-41, in an independent girls’ basketball game Wednesday night in Turners Falls.
The victorious Vikings hit eight 3-pointers, including five from Sydney Cyr, who finished with 16 points. Stephanie Start added two 3s for her team-high 17 points, and Shannon Ryan hit one 3-pointer as part of her 11-point output.
The Vikings (4-2) led 11-6 after the first quarter but the Eagles (1-4) chipped away and outscored the visitors in each of the next two quarters to tie the game at 31-31 entering the fourth. Franklin Tech captain Michelle Leh said that the team is beginning to gel through five games, which helped the team stay focused and come back from the early deficit to make things interesting late.
“When we have good morale, we can come back from anything, no matter how deep the deficit is,” she said. “I think we are all starting to play together, and we are figuring out how the freshman play, which is helping us.”
Leh finished with 12 points for the Eagles. Teammate Ashlee Townsley led the way with 16, followed by Lexi Barrett with 5 and Isabelle Duga with 4.
“We still have a lot of work to do, but the girls are improving,” Franklin Tech coach Sean Knightly said. “It was nice to see some girls play with serious passion tonight. The girls seem to be getting more and more competitive each week, and that’s what I’m looking for.”
The Eagles host Easthampton High School Friday night at 6.
