Double Edge Theatre will present the Ensemble Adilei of Georgia on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m. The ensemble will perform a program of traditional polyphonic Georgian songs and chants on its first U.S. tour.
Adilei’s main passion lies in the songs from the province of Guria in western Georgia, a style often compared to jazz because of its strong improvisational component, where all the voice parts move independently of each other to create contrapuntal polyphony ( two or more simultaneous lines of independent melody) — contrapuntally organized music focuses on melodic interaction between multiple voices rather than harmonic interaction.
On Wednesday, Jan. 18, Double Edge, Elmer’s and The Inn at Norton Hill will host a workshop with the Ensemble Adilei from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Gurian song is also characterized by krimanchuli, a yodeling technique often present in the upper voice.
Tickets for the concert are $20. Tickets for the workshop are $25. Tickets for both are $40.
All events will be held at Double Edge Theatre, 948 Conway Road in Ashfield.
