Ryan Potters led a balanced offensive attack and Pioneer defeated South Hadley, 56-22, in a grades 7 & 8 Suburban League boys’ basketball game Tuesday night at Messer Gymnasium in Northfield.
Troy Emond finished with 11 points in the win, Jared Hubbard netted 9 points, and Liam Bradley-Curtis added 8. Quinn Grover tossed in 6 points and was a defensive leader.
Pioneer 5/6 wins
Brayden Thayer paced Pioneer with 14 points during a 40-20 win over Southampton B in a grades 5 & 6 SL boys’ basketball game Tuesday night in Northfield.
Sam Glazier added 10 points, Josh Wood tossed in 7, and Everett Allen finished with 4.
Sawmill 10K registrations
The annual Sawmill River 10K Road Race will take place Saturday in Montague Center.
Online registration is available on www.runreg.com until noon on Friday, and runners can also register beginning at 9 a.m. on the day of the race. The race begins at 10 a.m. near the Village Common on Main Street and features multiple divisions. Entry fees are $25 prior to the race of $30 on the morning of the race. Hot and cold refreshments will be available.
The event benefits the Sponsor-A-Child Scholarship Program of the Montague Parks & Recreation Department. The event is a USA Track & Field sanctioned event.

Umpire course
The Hampshire-Franklin Baseball Umpires Association will conduct an instructional course for new umpires in January, February and March.
Members umpire scholastic baseball games in Franklin and Hampshire counties during April and May, as well as many summer-league games. The course consists of eight classes, which run on Sunday evenings from 6-8 p.m. The first class begins on Jan. 15 and runs through March 12. There is no class on Super Bowl Sunday.
Cost of the course is $50 and umpires must be at least 18-years-old and submit to a national background check.

Worcester State clinics
Worcester State University is holding a number of upcoming baseball clinics:
• The inaugural Holiday Fun Baseball Clinic will take place Dec. 27 through 29 in the multi-purpose gymnasium at the school.
The clinic is open to players ages 8 through 18 and runs from 9 a.m. until noon each day. Players can sign up for one or all three days. Cost is $30 per day or $75 for all three.
• The 10th annual Friday Night Baseball School will run on six Friday nights beginning Jan. 27.The clinic is open to players in grades 1 through 12 and takes place in the multi-purpose gym. Hitting runs from 6 to7 p.m., and pitching runs from 7 to 8 p.m. Cost is $100 per session or $165 for both.
• The 22nd annual Hitting Clinic will run from Feb. 20 through 22 in the multi-purpose gym.
The clinic is open to players ages 8 through 18 and runs from 9 a.m. until noon each day. Cost is $40 per day or $100 for all three. It is the longest continuous running clinic in New England.
