GREENFIELD — Motorists will be getting some leniency over feeding parking meters during snow emergencies.

Mayor William Martin has announced a new parking enforcement policy for snow emergencies, during which the town will not issue parking tickets in certain areas.

Snow emergencies will be declared by the mayor’s office in conjunction with the Department of Public Works and the Greenfield Police Department. Notice will be given through multiple channels, including radio and the town’s website. On days when the town determines parking will be drastically altered or that the paying of meters would cause possible safety hazards due to snow berms or ice buildups, citations will not be issued for non-payment in those areas.

The town will announce the lifting of payment regulations, affected locations and duration on the town’s website. The lifting of these regulations only applies to hourly paid spaces at parking meters and marked “pay and display” spaces in town parking lots.

Marked “permit parking only” spaces will continue to be reserved for permit holders from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and during snow emergencies. A list of streets and lots that have permit parking can be found on the town’s parking website at greenfield-ma.gov/parking.

Parking bans will not be lifted and residents should adhere to these bans throughout a snow emergency. Individuals wishing to appeal parking tickets can do so using the standard ticket appeals process.
