Winter parking ban now in effect
BERNARDSTON — The Bernardston Board of Selectmen announced a winter parking ban on state highways such as Church Street, Brattleboro Road and South Street during a meeting Wednesday.
Although parking on state highways is discouraged throughout the rest of the year as well, the Board of Selectmen explained it is particularly pertinent to move vehicles during inclement weather, like snow storms, when Highway Department vehicles are plowing or spreading salt and sand. The town-wide ban specifically prohibits parking on state highways during inclement weather.
The ban is effective immediately through March 3. Violators may have their vehicles towed or receive a fine.
Off-street parking is available behind the Powers Institute.

Fiscal health
BERNARDSTON — Patrice Squillante of Melanson Heath, an accounting and tax firm, says Bernardston is in good fiscal health.
She presented the results of an audit of Bernardston’s fiscal year 2016 documents during a Board of Selectmen’s meeting Wednesday.
Squillante said the town has very healthy fund balances, identifying no material weaknesses or significant deficiencies.
“Departments that are responsible for your financial security are getting together and that’s working,” she said.
Going forward, Squillante suggested developing a formal investment policy and tasking the town accountant with gradually performing internal audits within individual town departments.
