Mahar Regional School built a big lead and survived a furious fourth-quarter to edge Sabis International Charter School, 45-43, in independent girls’ basketball action Monday night in Springfield.
Cassie Verheyen led nine scorers for Mahar with 14 points. She also hauled down 14 rebounds to open with a double-double. Kenzie Tenney contributed 11 points for the Senators, who led 12-2 after 1, then built it to as many as 17 before Sabis rallied to make it close.
An’janae Washington led all scorers with 24 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, for the Bulldogs.
“We had a big lead and let it slip away,” offered Mahar head coach Larry Fisher. “We had a few turnovers and lost our composure.”
Mahar hosts another difficult opponent on Wednesday when Belchertown High School visits the Grzesik-Bixby Complex for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
NMH boys’ hoop
Andrew Platek had a huge day from beyond the arc and Northfield Mount Hermon School defeated Avon Old Farms, 87-66, in a boys’ prep basketball game at the Scholar Roundball Classic at Babson College in Wellesley.
The University of North Carolina commit went 6-for-9 from downtown en route to 21 points and 7 rebounds. NMH led from tip to buzzer, holding a 40-32 lead at halftime but quickly doubling that in the second half. NMH (6-2) also won for the 11th time at the Roundball Classic, the most in the history of the event.
Tomas Murphy, a Northeastern University commit, shot 7-of-8 from the field and scored 18 points to go with 8 rebounds, while Nate Laszewski added 13 points and 5 rebounds. Matt DeWolf, who has committed to Brown, finished with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals, and Kai Toews had 7 points and 12 assists.
Squirts results
Amherst scored three unanswered goals in the third period to overtake Franklin County Hockey Association Gilmore & Farrell Green, 5-2, in a Greater Springfield League Squirt Division game Sunday at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.
Brady Booska scored both goals for Gilmore & Farrell, and Jack Petrin made 24 saves. Amherst and FCHA each scored twice in the second period to go into the third tied at 2-2, but Amherst scored three goals, including two in the final two minutes of play, to seal the win. Will Petrin and Evan Galli played well defensively.
On Satuday, Booska scored twice to help FCHA to a 4-4 draw against Wilbraham Twin Meadows in a GSL game at the Olympia in West Springfield.
Booska scored with 2:06 left in the third period that put Gilmore & Farrell ahead, but Wilbraham tied the game with 27 seconds to play. Jake Petrin scored on an assist from Jake Knight for FCHA, and Jake Jurek scored. Jack Petrin made 27 saves, and Cooper Smith and Loki Rhodes played well defensively.
• In Squirt Divison play Saturday, the Gilmore & Farrell Hurricanes) edged Holy Name, 3-1, at the Olympia in West Springfield.
Camden Skiffington scored both goals, assisted by Griffin Mariani, and Sailor Cohen added an assist. Anson Prunier registgered 11 saves for the win.
Frontier 5/6 tops Pioneer
Ty Sadoski scored 11 points and had 6 steals and Frontier beat Pioneer, 38-33, in a Suburban League grades 5 & 6 boys’ basketball game over the weekend in Northfield.
Dan Fellows had 7 points and 5 rebounds, and Brady Burch had 4 points and 6 steals. David Gray added 5 points, and Will Chalfant had 5 points and 5 boards. Liam Skribiski-Banack pulled down 7 rebounds, and Erich Brown tossed in 4 points. No Pioneer stats were provided
Pioneer 5/6 beats Gateway
Brayden Thayer scored 12 points over the weekend to lead Pioneer to a 47-39 win over Gateway in a SL grades 5 & 6 game in Huntington.
Gavin Gammell, Kurt Redeker and Josh Wood each added 7 points in the win.
Pioneer 7/8 sweep pair
Ryan Potter paced a balanced offensive attack on Sunday as Pioneer dumped Gateway, 66-10, in a grades 7 & 8 SL boys’ hoop game in Huntington.
Brody Baird had 8 points for the winners.
• On Saturday, Troy Emond scored 19 points as Pioneer edged Frontier, 65-42, in Northfield.
Josh Glazier had 13 points in the win, and Quinn Grover added 8 points.
Ethan Machon and Owen Morse each had 10 points for Frontier.
