TEMPLETON — The state police in Athol are investigating the cause of a car crash that killed two young women on Route 2 early Saturday morning.
According to the Massachusetts State Police Office of Media Relations, cousins Victoria Riley, 21, of Gardner, and Callie Riley, 23, of Orange, died around 1:20 a.m. on Saturday at the Otter River overpass in Templeton.
The women were traveling east on Route 2 in a 2010 Mercedes when the car went off the road and hit a bridge abutment. The vehicle then rolled over and became engulfed in flames.
According to police, the victims were identified at the medical examiner’s office.
Witty’s Funeral Home in Orange is handling the arrangements for Callie Riley.
The Templeton Fire Department responded and extinguished the vehicle fire. Templeton EMS, Templeton Police and the state Department of Transportation also responded.
