TURNERS FALLS — Town firefighters stopped a fire at Suzee’s Third St. Laundry Wednesday evening that could have been a lot worse than it was.
“It was a fire in a dryer unit that extended up into the duct work,” Deputy Fire Chief Leon Ambo said, noting that “it had possibility, but went slow so we caught it.”
Firefighters were alerted to the fire around 5:30 pm., and responded with two engines and a ladder truck.
At the laundromat a few hours later, the tinge of stale smoke stained the air. Inside, the dryers’ baseplates had been removed to ventilate.
Next door at The Rendezvous, a bystander said he saw a lot of smoke, but no flames.
Ambo described damages to the building on 3rd Street as “minimal,” and said the business will have to shut down its dryers for a few days; however, washing machines will remain open.
