ATHOL — An Orange man has begun his second stint as a constable in Athol.
The Athol Board of Selectmen voted unanimously on Tuesday to appoint Randy Plante to a new three-year term, which will end on Dec. 6, 2019.
Plante said some towns elect their constables, while others appoint them. He said he is elected in Orange and appointed in Athol.
“Once a constable is elected or appointed … you can serve across the entire state. However, there are certain court documents that are jurisdictional and, therefore, for me to serve certain court documents in Athol, I would have to be appointed,” he said. “But for 80 to 90 percent of what a constable does, I can serve in Athol anyways.”
Plante said many constables serve only ceremoniously, but he is more active. He said he serves notices for Athol’s public offices. He said his fee for service is typically $50.
“I’m just a phone call away,” he said.
The selectmen thanked Plante for his continued service on Tuesday and he thanked them for the opportunity.
Athol Town Manager Shaun Suhoski said constables also post town meeting warrants at all required locations. Plante is currently Athol’s only constable.
Contact information for Plante is available on his Massachusetts Bay Constables Association page at bit.ly/2h7bN04.
