GREENFIELD — Town Council will hold a special meeting Monday to appropriate $750,000 from the town’s general stabilization account to keep the tax rate from increasing.

“That $750,000 is good news for the taxpayer,” Council Vice President Isaac Mass said. “They’re going to pay a little bit less than they would otherwise pay, and that’s not coming from a source that should affect any services in the town.”

Mass said the money in the general stabilization came from last year’s surplus — a combination of nonrecurring revenue sources, underestimations on revenue and savings from unexpended appropriations that are certified by the state’s Department of Revenue annually.

“The tax rate will come down to where it was projected by the mayor’s office,” he said. “This was intentional, it’s what we were planning on doing the entire time.”

Mass said the council chose to appropriate the money at a special meeting because the town is preparing to send out tax bills for the next two quarters.

“The council has chosen to have a special meeting rather than make the taxpayers pay one dime more than they absolutely need to pay,” he said, adding, “I think most taxpayers will see a nominal difference. We’re talking pennies.”

The meeting will be held Monday at 6 p.m. in the Planning Office.
