Jacob Salls had a memorable day in the woods on Friday.
The Ashfield native shot a pair of big deer that day and checked them into Gould’s Sugarhouse in Shelburne on Day 5 of the Massachusetts shotgun deer hunting season.
Three area checking stations reported 26 deer on Friday afternoon. Salls bagged the heaviest deer of the day with his 194-pound, 9-point buck. He wasn’t done there, as he also checked a 152-pound, 6-pointer, making it a successful day.
On most other days, Jack Gougeon of Rowe would have tagged the biggest deer of the day with his 188-pound, 8-pointer that he checked into Overwatch Outpost in Charlemont. Dale Ward of Buckland checked a 147-pound, 10-point buck into Gould’s on Friday, and Edward Douville Sr. of Orange checked a 140-pound, 8-pointer into Grrr Gear in Orange.
Gould’s led the way with 13 checks on Friday, while Grrr had 10. Gould’s also reported 13 checks from Thursday. Of those, Michael Dagilus of Montague had the heaviest at 162-pound, 8-pointer, and Ralph Osgood of Conway shot a 152-pound, 8-pointer.
