WENDELL – The Wendell Free Library plans to host a talk by writer Kevin Gardner on Friday.

The talk, slated to begin at 7 p.m., will cover topics from his book “The Granite Kiss,” about New England stone walls, and will also kick off an art installation of photographs of “Stonewalls and Stone Structures of Wendell, New and Old.”

Gardner is expected to explain how and why New England acquired its thousands of miles of stone walls, the ways in which they and other dry stone structures were built, how their styles emerged and changed over time, and their significance to the famous New England landscape. Other topics might include: differences in approach between historical and contemporary wall-builders, a discussion of restoration tips and techniques, and information about design, acquisition of materials, preservation, and analysis. A question-and-answer period is planned.

The library also invites Wendell residents to bring along photos of stonewalls or structures they have constructed or admire for inclusion in “Stonewalls and Stone Structures of Wendell, New and Old.”

Copies of “The Granite Kiss” will be available for sale.
