Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan has condemned recent hate-filled graffiti on Mount Tom and other criminal acts against minorities, nationwide, that have been reported in recent days.
In a statement, he encouraged area residents who believe they have been the target of a bias-motivated threats, harassment and intimidation to immediately report it to their local police department and to call a new hotline established by Attorney General Maura Healey.
Healey says the hotline established last week has already fielded about 400 calls.
“The defacing of state conservation property with racist and anti-Semitic graffiti is deplorable,” Sullivan said. “Every citizen should be able to enjoy the Mount Tom Reservation without fear of such offensive vandalism.”
The Attorney General launched the hotline following reports of harassment and intimidation of racial, ethnic and religious minorities, women, LGBTQ individuals and immigrants since Election Day. She advises residents who have witnessed or experienced bias-motivated threats, harassment or violence to call 1-800-994-3228. Residents can also contact the AG’s Office through its Facebook and Twitter. The hotline will be managed by attorneys and staff in the AG’s Office.
Potential hate crimes, including bias-motivated assault, battery and property damage, should also be reported directly to local police. Residents who fear for their immediate safety should call 911.
Most hate crimes are prosecuted by the District Attorney’s Office.
