Kids’ basketball, free, at Cowell Gym

SHELBURNE FALLS — The Shelburne Recreation Committee is hosting a free, drop-in evening basketball program that is open to all kindergarten-through-Grade 6 children from Buckland, Shelburne and Colrain, starting Nov. 28.

Sessions will be held weekly, beginning at 5:30 p.m., and running through Thursday, March 16. Each group will have its own day, as follows: Monday (Nov. 28) girls in Grades 4-6; Tuesday (Nov. 29) girls and boys in Grades K to 1; Wednesday (Nov. 30) boys and girls in Grades 2 to 3; Thursday (Dec. 1) boys in Grades 4 to 6.

To be successful, the program will require parent volunteers to run the programs, or to fill in for a parent volunteer on evenings when they can’t be present. Also, children in Grades K through 3 must be accompanied by an adult who stays for the hour-long program.

Those who can help coach are asked to call Shelburne Recreation Committee member Diana Hardina at 625-9921.

Boys and girls are welcome to join the program at any time.

Stretch of Ashfield road closing

ASHFIELD — Beginning Dec. 5, part of Apple Valley Road will be closed until further notice, because of safety concerns about a deteriorating, one-lane bridge and through-traffic in difficult winter conditions. Highway Supt. Thomas Poissant said the road will be closed from about 1.9 miles northwest of its intersection with Route 112 to its Tatro Road intersection. The bridge has been reduced to one lane, and Poissant is concerned about northbound traffic approaching the  single lane from a steep hill. The bridge itself will stay open only to accommodate access for two households.
