ERVING — A head-on collision in front of Weatherheads convenience store on Route 2 slowed westbound traffic and sent four people to the hospital around 4:15 p.m. Thursday.

Trooper Ann McDonough of the Athol state police said the driver of a black Dodge Charger, Cody LaPine, 26, of Bernardston and two passengers — a 18-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman — were all transported to the hospital as a precaution due to minor injuries from airbag deployment. The driver of a silver Mitsubishi SUV, Katherine Donelan, 20, of Orange was also transported for the same reason, McDonough said.

Massachusetts State Police declined to provide details of the crash Thursday night, citing an ongoing investigation, but a Weatherheads clerk said a review of the store’s surveillance camera footage shows that the two cars collided when one westbound vehicle struck another traveling east as it attempted to turn into the store parking lot.

Both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage, and both were towed.

Erving police and fire personnel, Montague police and Massachusetts State Police responded to the crash.

Traffic was flowing normally on Route 2 by 4:45 p.m.
