SUNDERLAND — An attempted “chemical suicide” prompted a response from the regional Hazardous Materials Response Team on Route 47 early Monday.
Sunderland Police received reports of a despondent male at a scenic overlook near Falls Road around 4:30 a.m., according to a press release.
The 50-year-old man, whose identity police withheld, was outside of his parked Hyundai Sonata.
South County EMS was dispatched and evaluated the man, and police learned while waiting for their arrival that the man had attempted a chemical suicide, and found two jars of chemicals on the front passenger floor of the car. Police noted the two chemicals were mixed, prompting a response from the Sunderland Fire Department and the Haz-Mat team.
The man was taken to the hospital.
“There is no threat to the public,” police reported Monday morning. “This is still a very active scene with an ongoing investigation.”
