ORANGE — Six fire departments responded to a fire in a commercial building at 123 New Athol Road early Saturday morning.
According to James Hopkins, a firefighter with the Orange Fire Department, the call went out at 2:59 a.m. The structure was a 100-by-25-foot commercial building owned by Athol Screw Machine Products.
The Orange Fire Department responded with one ladder truck and three engines, and called in mutual aid upon arrival for heavy smoke showing from both sides of the building.
Firefighters from New Salem, Warwick, Athol, Turners Falls, Greenfield and Erving responded. Additionally, Northfield and Wendell fire departments provided station coverage.
“The guys did an excellent job,” Hopkins said. “The fire was knocked down fairly quickly. Out of that whole building, it was contained to a single garage that housed a paint truck.”
Hopkins said firefighters had the fire under control within an hour and all units were cleared by 6:10 a.m. No one was injured.
Hopkins said the cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal.
