Hoosac Valley High School scored twice in the second half to get past Mahar Regional School, 3-1, in a Western Massachusetts Division III girls’ soccer tournament first-round game Friday afternoon at the Woodward Complex in Orange.
The ninth-seeded Hurricanes (11-7-1) actually scored three unanswered goals after eighth-seeded Mahar (12-6-1) had taken a 1-0 lead with 7 minutes, 30 seconds left in the first half. Hoosac tied the game 13 seconds after Mahar got on the board, and then scored twice in the second half to earn the win.
“It was certainly a disappointing end to the season,” said Senators head coach Chad Softic. “We just didn’t make enough plays to win the game.”
Chloe Martel scored the eventual game-winner with 23:34 left in the game on an assist from Claudia Bresett, and Olivia Bresett iced the win with 10:40 to play on an assist from Shaleigh Levesque.
Mahar outshot the Hurricanes, 23-15, but Hoosac goalie Kailynne Frederick made 12 saves to backstop the victory. Tori Tenney stopped eight shots in the loss.
The Senators jumped out to a 1-0 lead as senior Kenzie Tenney scored her final goal with the program, but Hoosac took the ensuing kickoff and used precision passing to cut through the Mahar defense and Claudia Bresett tied the game 13 seconds later on an assist from Ellie Field.
“Kenzie Tenney did everything in her power to keep us in it, and I thought Hannah Paul was sensational like she has been all season,” Softic concluded. “I thought a lot of the young girls stepped up.”
