BERNARDSTON — The Board of Selectmen expressed their discontent with the new Town Hall furnace during a meeting last Wednesday.

Floyd “Skip” Dunnell III, service manager for Sandri, and Andrew Glace of G&L Energy Services, who were responsible for the project, were called before the board to discuss the work.

“We came in a little miffed to see the workmanship of some of the plumbing of our new heating system,” Board of Selectmen Chairman Andrew Girard said.

Though the board had thought the pipes would be run through the basement, the pipes were run along Town Hall’s walls. They were also displeased with a large radiator filling a closet.

“There’s no way I’d heat my house like that,” board member Robert Raymond said.

“Everything that we installed was installed to what the specifications were,” Dunnell responded. He said the pipes would be susceptible to freezing if they were run through the unheated basement and it would be more difficult to detect leaks.

Dunnell also explained the work is not yet finished. Once done, the pipes will be covered with fiberglass insulation with a white cover.

“It’s going to become invisible after a while, it really will,” said Wayne Gagnon of Sandri. “I think the town is really going to benefit from the way it was laid out.”

The new system is highly energy efficient, and could be powered by a small generator in case of an emergency. The board expressed no concern with the functionality of the system, which has been working well since it was turned on Oct. 14.
