GREENFIELD — The Board of Trustees of the Massachusetts Virtual Academy has named Dr. Judith C. Houle as its interim executive director.

Houle will serve as interim executive director while the school launches its search for its next executive director.

The board parted ways with former executive director Carl Tillona in September, according to a press release.

“We’re thrilled to have someone with Dr. Houle’s background, experience, and expertise available to us during this time of transition,” said Daryl Essensa, chair of the Board of Trustees.

“MAVA is a very unique and exciting school,” Houle said in a statement. “In a very short time, I’ve come to realize what a difference this school makes in the lives of the students we serve.”

A graduate of Barrington College, Houle earned her master’s degree in educational administration from Westfield State University and holds a doctoral degree in education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Houle served as superintendent of schools for Belchertown from 2009 to 2014, then, as interim superintendent of schools for Granby Public Schools.

The school in Greenfield was the state’s first Commonwealth Virtual Academy.
