The Eagles (4-7-6) needed to beat the Vikings and then defeat High School of Commerce in today’s season finale to be tournament eligible but fell short.
Frontier 3, Southwick 0 — Frontier Regional School will get a chance to defend its string of 11 western Mass. Division III girls’ volleyball titles.
The Red Hawks qualified under the 70 percent rule Monday afternoon as they defeated Southwick-Tolland Regional High School, 25-14, 25-7, 25-13, in an independent match in Southwick.
Frontier (7-13) plays in the Eastern Division against all Division II opponents, and the 70 percent rule states that if a team plays in a league that mandates it plays 70 percent or more of its games against opponents in a higher division, that team can still qualify for the tournament by winning 50 percent of its games against teams in its division. This season, Frontier only played two matches against Division III opponents. The Red Hawks lost a five-set match to Lee High School a couple of weeks back, which made Monday’s season-finale against Southwick do-or-die.
“The girls were pretty excited after the last ball fell in tonight,” Frontier coach Sean MacDonald said. “It’s something that has been on everybody’s mind. We wanted to get in and see how we do against Division III teams.
“I think we’ve played seven or eight matches against the top 10 teams in the state,” he continued. “Those are the teams we want to play, but we are in the deep end of the pool right now, and we are just not old enough or experienced enough to win those matches. But the girls care about the tradition and their part in it. They didn’t want to be the team that broke the string of tournament appearances.”
MacDonald also credited Southwick for scheduling the Red Hawks after other teams balked at playing the perennial powerhouse.
“We needed one more match and it’s a credit to Southwick that they scheduled us,” he said. “Southwick is a young program and their coach is trying to do what we do when we schedule stronger teams. She wants to see how they stack up.”
Lauren Davenport finished with 14 kills, 3 aces and 3 digs in the win, while Selayna Bathurst had 5 kills, 4 aces and 5 digs. Hailey Orloski had 8 serves and 2 digs, and Ella Deane had 20 assists and 5 digs. Grace Randall had 4 kills, and Bri Thurber added 6 digs.
Frontier and the other girls’ volleyball teams in the area will find out their fate in the WMass Division III Tournament when the seeds are announced today.
