Dick’s Angels Relay For Life team will be serving Friday night at the Bernardston Vets Club from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The special will be sweet sausage grinders, in addition to the usual hamburgers, hot dogs, and grilled cheeses. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
The Catamount Hill Association and the Deerfield River Watershed Association are sponsoring a free loop hike in the Northeast part of the Catamount Hills. Follow old roads bordered by rock walls past cellar holes of Cannon, Willis and several Shippee families. There will be some off-trail exploration, too. The group will investigate unusual rock formations, foundations and cliffs and maybe some mushrooms, too. Hikers should bring water, lunch to eat at the Devil’s Oven Cave next to the Dens and a flashlight for going into the caves. Bring extra socks. The hike will be approximately three miles on uneven ground but little elevation change. Meet at the end of the East Catamount Road at 10 a.m. From Griswoldville in Colrain on Route 112, take Adamsville Road to Lively Road on left; immediately take East Catamount Road on left (steep and dirt) to end. Four Season Farming, “Keeping the Light Alive” on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at Laughing Dog Farm. This is an intensive, hands-on introduction to the art and science of growing and harvesting high-quality green food around the calendar, in New England, without any artificial heating Farmer Dan will orient the (casual to serious) grower to the strategies, materials, methods, joys (and pitfalls) of cultivating and harvesting cold-hardy crops like spinach, kale, Asian greens, alliums like leeks, herbs and more, under low and high tunnel greenhouses, cold frames, row cover, and even right outdoors, despite harsh and variable conditions. Franklin Area Survival Center: The Food Pantry & Thrift Store hosted by staff and volunteers is at 96 Fourth St., 863-9549. The Thrift Store is open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. the Food Pantry is open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The center is closed Federal holidays. The Thrift Shop is open to the general public and helps finance its Food Pantry. In an emergency, such as a fire or flood, the center will supply needed clothing and linens, free, and additional food to help the victims of a disaster.
