Delaney Parker scored twice in the second half and Mahar Regional School defeated Pioneer Valley Regional School, 4-0, in a Franklin County League girls’ soccer game Thursday afternoon in Orange.
Mahar led 1-0 at the break after Cassie Verheyen scored the lone goal of the first half on an assist from Kianna Reilly. The Senators needed just 1 minute, 30 seconds into the second half to make it 2-0 as Parker scored from Mollie Burke.
Parker added her second of the game with 22 minutes left, and Ella Fontaine made it 4-0 with 10 minutes left on an assist from Burke.
Mahar held a commanding 56-2 edge in shots but Pioneer goalie Leah Fuess came up huge, stopping 23 shots to keep the game close. Marie Nottleson stopped one shot to earn the shutout.
“Cassie Verheyen did a great job and really controlled the midfield and Delaney Parker and Ella Fontaine had a couple of beautiful balls,” said Senators hed coach Chad Softic. “Pioneer did a nice job of condensing the field so, although we had a lot of shots, they were from the top of the 18 or just outside of it.”
South Hadley 5, Athol 0 — Marley Medina scored twice and had one assist to lead South Hadley High School to a 5-0 Pioneer North girls’ soccer victory Thursday evening in South Hadley.
Alexa Blaney, Kyra Schoenfeld and Taylor Roy each added one goal for the Tigers, who led 2-0 at halftime. Sarah Fudger added a pair of assists, and Sophie Gatzounas made two saves and also had an assist.
Peyton Parker stopped 18 shots in the loss.
FC Tech 1, Putnam 1 — Franklin County Technical School scored late to forge a 1-1 draw with Putnam Vocational Technical Academy in a Tri-County League girls’ soccer match Thursday in Springfield.
Jennifer Graham scored in the 39th minute to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead. Naydeliz Ramirez had the assist.
With five minutes left, the Eagles’ Brooke Adams was taken down in the penalty area to draw a penalty kick, and teammate Rachel Shearer booted home the freebie to tie it.
Tami Hamilton made a dozen saves in net for Franklin Tech, which was outshot 13-3. Erica Dean played well defensively.
Franklin Tech goes to Greenfield High School tonight at 6.
Athol 6, Greenfield 1 — Mason Tarbell and Avery Clyatt each scored twice to lead to Athol High School over Greenfield, 6-1, in an independent boys’ soccer match Thursday in Greenfield.
Anthony Negron and Jordan Carasquillo also scored for Red Raiders, while Bryce King and Colby Soltysik both notched two assists.
Asier Areta tallied the lone Green Wave goal, assisted by Losif Covalenco.
Greenfield hosts Mohawk Monday at 4 p.m. in its season finale.
Smith Academy 1, Mahar 0 — Vanessa Skawski scored 5 minutes, 32 seconds into the second half and Smith Academy took a big step toward the postseason with a 1-0 victory over Mahar in a North Division field hockey game Thursday in Hatfield.
The Falcons (6-7-2) need four points in their final three games to qualify and have Amherst Regional High School, Frontier Regional School and Mohawk Trail Regional High School remaining on the schedule.
Izzy Duseau set up the game-deciding goal, and Olivia Cavanaugh stopped all six shots she faced to earn the shutout.
Hannah Birch made two saves in the loss.
Correction: Kelsey Walker had an assist for Pioneer Valley Regional School Saturday during the Panthers’ 4-1 win over Turners Falls High School.
The assist was inadvertently awarded to Ashley Walker during Monday’s edition of The Recorder.
Agawam 3, Turners Falls 1 — Adrianna Dimiao finished with 24 digs but Turners Falls suffered a 25-27, 25-15, 28-26, 25-22 loss to Agawam High School in an independent girls’ volleyball match Thursday evening in Turners Falls.
“Adrianna was amazing tonight,” Turners Falls coach Kelly Liimatainen said.
Sienna Dillensneider had a big all-around game for the Indians with 11 assists, 6 digs, 1 block, 1 kill and 1 ace. Tess Hunter finished with 5 aces, 3 kills and 2 digs, and Jordyn Fiske had 5 aces, 3 kills and 5 digs.
Mohawk 3, FC Tech 0 — Ashley Reynolds totaled 13 assists, 3 digs and 2 kills to lead Mohawk Trail Regional High School to a 25-13, 25-18, 25-17 independent girls’ volleyball win over Franklin County Tech on Thursday in Buckland.
Lexi Mazza had another solid performance for the Warriors (6-9) with 6 kills, 7 aces and 8 digs, while Hayley Lowell had 13 digs, 3 aces and 2 kills,McKenzie Mayhew added 8 deigs, 4 aces and 2 kills, and Jordanm Rice contributed d digs and 3 aces.
Reagan Fiske led the Eagles with 6 digs, Jocelyn Holloway finished with 3 kills and 2 digs, and Ryleigh Barton had 2 aces and 2 digs.
Ware 15½, Mahar 8½ — John Soltys fored a 39 and took 4 points to lead Ware High School over Mahar, 15½-8½, in a Bi-County League Eastern Division golf match Thursday at Ellinwood Country Club in Athol.
Alex Gauthier (45) and Doug Mulligan weaqch added 4 pojunts for the Indians (13-3, 9-3 East).
Tucker Nintean swept 4 points, Corey Sanderson added 2½ points and Zach Geyster took 2 points for the Senators (7-6, 6-6).
