Amherst Regional High School is the clear favorite to win the Western Massachusetts Division II Tournament this year. Frontier Regional School saw first-hand why the Hurricanes are that good.

The Hurricanes used their offensive consistency with solid serving and near-flawless defense to cruise to a 25-13, 25-16, 25-15 PVIAC Eastern Division girls’ volleyball victory over the Red Hawks Wednesday night at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.

“They have good servers, good hitters, and they’re just older and more poised than us right now,” Frontier coach Sean MacDonald said of Amherst, which moved to 17-0 overall and 7-0 in the East. “Where they are this year is where we’ve been in previous years.”

Lauren Davenport led Frontier with 6 kills, 7 digs and 2 aces. Ella Deane dished out 13 assists, and Selayna Bathurst had 3 aces and 3 kills. Bri Thurber collected 7 digs, Penelope Hosley contributed 4 kills and Hailey Orloski chipped in 3 kills.

“We’re going through some growing pains but I’m proud of them because we’re getting better every day,” said MacDonald. “We’re just working on consistency. If we can qualify for Western Mass. (by beating Southwick-Tolland Regional High School), it’s going to be a nice change to play some Division III teams.”
