BUCKLAND — Want to paint like Buckland’s iconic artist, Robert Strong Woodward?
Award-winning pastel artist Gregory John Maichack of Holyoke will present “Robert Strong Woodward: A Pastel Painting Workshop,” for adults on Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Buckland Public Library, 30 Upper St.
Woodward (1885-1957) was renowned for his New England landscapes. A Northampton native, Woodward took up painting professionally after a gunshot wound paralyzed him from the waist down. He found refuge at his grandparents’ Buckland farm, and in 1910, he studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Woodward ultimately settled in Buckland and had a successful career. Woodward’s paintings, “October Gold,” “The Funny Little House,” and “Vermont Drama” will be discussed as examples of Woodward’s inspiring work.
This pastel painting workshop is designed to introduce beginners to the art of pastel painting. Experienced artists will also benefit from seeing Woodward’s and Maichack’s pastel paintings up close.
There is free admission, but seating is limited to 20, and early registration is recommended. Call 413-625-9412 to register in advance.
Participants will be able to experiment with hundreds of Maichak’s professional grade pastels, pastel pencils, and pastel paper, in this two-hour workshop.
“We will refer to Woodward’s ‘October Gold,’ an oil painting, and two pastel paintings: ‘Vermont Drama,’ and ‘Funny Little House,’ to see his work up close to unveil the process,” Maichak said. He will show how to use the techniques of masters like Woodward. Students will go home with their pastel works.
Maichack is an experienced teacher of pastel techniques and has been recognized by the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) Boston; Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC), and more than 800 libraries and local cultural councils.
Maichack has won awards from the Bennington Center for the Arts and the Great Lakes Pastel Society. He has pastel-painted publisher Charles Merriam for the Merriam-Webster Co., been in many national juried shows and received several Massachusetts Cultural Council grants.
