Hopkins 2, Athol 1 — Julia Carey’s direct kick was disallowed in the final minute and Athol High School fell to Hopkins Academy, 2-1, in an independent girls’ soccer game Thursday night at O’Brien Field in Athol.
The Red Raiders (5-8-1) fell into a 2-0 hole but tried to climb out as Carey scored on a direct kick midway through the second half, and then got another chance with under a minute to play when she lined up another kick and hit it home past Hopkins goalie Miranda Pitta. The officials waived the goal off, however, ruling that Carey did not stop the ball from rolling prior to taking the kick. She retook the kick and put it on net, but Pitta was able to make one of her six saves to keep Hopkins in the lead.
“We had plenty of opportunities to score against a good team tonight,” Athol coach Tim Cleveland said. “We are a young team, and I am happy with our effort.”
Hopkins scored three minutes into the game on a miscommunication in the Athol backfield, and the Golden Hawks took the 1-0 lead into the break. Athol had chances to score in the first half, including a play that saw Aly Raymond nearly score but have a shot cleared off the line by a Hopkins defender. The Red Raiders also had a shot nearly miss the post, that another forward almost got to in time to redirect.
“Those were two big plays that could have changed the first half,” Cleveland said.
Hopkins made it 2-0 nine minutes into the second half as Juliette Cook scored on an assist from Samantha Fetler.
Peyton Parker stopped 7 shots in the loss.
