SUNDERLAND — Residents with disabilities will soon have advocates speaking on their behalf in town government.
According to a notice posted on the town’s website, the Board of Selectmen will appoint five people as members of a newly formed Commission on Disability.
The announcement outlines that, based on Mass. General Law, the role of the commission will be “to research local problems of people with disabilities; advise and assist municipal officials and employees in ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and regulations that affect people with disabilities.”
All of that’s in addition to coordinating and carrying out “programs designed to meet the problems of people with disabilities in coordination with programs of the Massachusetts Office on Disability.”
Besides providing information and help to individual town residents, the commission will also review town policies, procedures, services, facilities and activities and then make improvement recommendations.
Other, non-governmental community groups, will also be able to get assistance with coordinating activities through the commission.
In short, the commission will provide “technical assistance to individuals, public agencies, businesses and organizations in all matters pertaining to disability.”
The notice asks anyone who’s interested in serving on the commission to email the Board of Selectmen at:
