Local farm to host walk — showcasing native wood for home building. “Woods to Home” walk, Saturday, Oct. 15, 9 a.m. to noon in Gill. Brian Donahue and Faith Rand, co-owners of the conserved Bascom Hollow Farm in Gill, will host a woods walk and tour of their farm house, which was built with lumber harvested from the family’s own woodlands.

The walk will feature discussion by forestry professionals who made the harvest and project possible. It will be followed by a tour of the Bascom Hollow farmhouse. Refreshments will be served, and there will be a discussion.

Deerfield River Watershed Association and Catamount Hill Association — In Colrain Saturday, Oct. 15, at 10 a.m. A walk in the Catamount Hills led by Muriel Russell and sponsored by the Deerfield River Watershed Association and the Catamount Hill Association. The hike will be on the southern end of the Catamounts, using old roads to pass the sites of the Farleys, Peter Shippee and Holden families. After lunch at the large foundation of the Shippee family, the hike will go to the monument, where the first American flag was flown over a schoolhouse in 1812. October is Archeology Month in Massachusetts, so there will be investigations of several early mills sites. The walk is about three miles long over uneven and hilly ground, with at least one stream crossing. Hikers should bring water, lunch and extra socks. To reach the assembly point in Colrain, go north from Shelburne Falls on Route 112 until Charlemont Road comes in from the left (west). Hikers will carpool to the start of the hike. Deerfield River Watershed Association — In Greenfield on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m., the Deerfield River Watershed Association will host an informative talk about dams on Deerfield River. Jason Canaday of Colrain will present on the details of how TransCanada manages water through a series of dams on the river. Mr. Canaday was the operator at Harriman Dam on the day that Tropical Storm Irene caused severe flooding throughout much of Western Massachusetts and Vermont.

Talk will be held at Four Rivers Charter School, 248 Colrain Road in Greenfield on Oct. 21. Refreshments at 6:30 p.m. Talk begins at 7 p.m.
