Colorado College scored four times in the first period and UMass was never able to recover as it went on to suffer a 7-4 independent hockey loss Saturday night at the Mullins Center in Amherst.

Branden Makara scored twice in the first 7 minutes, 15 seconds to help Colorado build a 3-0 lead. Steven Iacobellis scored at the midpoint of the first period to get UMass on the board, but Cole Josefchak scored with 1:30 left on the power play to put Colorado College up 4-1 at the break.

Ray Pigozzi scored a power play goal of his own early in the second period, but Colorado College responded 1:30 later as Bryce Van Horn found the back of the net. UMass went on to score the next two goals — a second-period goal by Griff Jeszka, and a third-period tally by Jonny Lazarus — to pull Umass to within a goal. But a pair of late Colorado College goals iced the win.

UMass was outshot, 41-18. Ryan Wischow allowed three goals on nine shots in the first period and was pulled in favor of Nic Renyard, who made 28 saves the rest of the way. Alex Leclerc stopped 14 shots in the win.

UMass is off until Oct. 21 when it hosts Army at 7 at the Mullins Center.

Grimard sets up goal

Lauren Grimard helped set up a goal Saturday but Franklin Pierce University suffered a 2-1 setback to Southern Connecticut State University in a Northeast 10 field hockey match in Rindge, N.H., Saturday.

The Turners Falls High School graduate had a pair of chances second-half chances stopped by Southern Connecticut goalie Brianna Craft, but on the rebound of the second shot, a scramble ensued in front of the net and Carly Canavan pounced on the ball and fired it home for what wound up as Franklin Pierce’s only goal of the day.

Southern Connecticut scored twice in the first half to lead 2-0. Franklin Pierce is now 3-9 on the season.

Quesnelle at Endicott

Remi Quesnelle led Endicott College in blocks Saturday and led her team to a 24-26, 25-16, 23-25, 25-15, 15-8 win over Westfield State University in a women’s volleyball match during the Tom Hay Invitational at Springfield College.

Quesnelle, the Frontier Regional School graduate, finished with a pair of blocks and also had six kills for Endicott, which improved to 14-8 on the season.

Preps

Football

Deerfield Academy won its second consecutive prep football game of the season with a 13-12 victory over Worcester Academy Saturday in Deerfield.

The Big Green improved to 2-1 on the season and hosts Loomis-Chaffee School Saturday at 3.

Soccer

Avon Old Farms defeated Deerfield, 2-0, in a boys’ prep soccer game Saturday in Deerfield.

Deerfield has lost three straight games after starting the season 3-0-1 and is now 3-3-1 on the season. The Big Green travels to Westminster School on Wednesday.

Field hockey

Kent School downed Deerfield, 4-0, in a prep field hockey game Saturday in Kent, Conn.

The Big Green is now 4-2 on the year.

Volleyball

Deerfield saw a three-match winning streak come to an end Saturday with a 3-2 loss to Hotchkiss School in a girls’ prep volleyball match in Salisbury, Conn.

The loss dropped Deerfield to 3-6.

Water polo

Deerfield Academy split a pair of boys’ water polo matches Saturday in Deerfield.

The Big Green defeated Hopkins School, 7-3, but lost to Chelsea Piers, 7-5.

Deerfield is 3-7 on the season.

Youth football

Frontier Peewees win

Frontier turned a pair of fumbles into touchdowns Saturday and went on to defeat Ludlow, 16-0, in a Suburban League Peewee Division football game in South Deerfield.

Lawson Landmark finished with three tackles on defense and also recovered a fumble for a touchdown in the win, while Teddy Cyr had one tackle and also recovered a fumble for a touchdown. Cyr, who finished with 15 rushing yards, ran in a two-point conversion, and CJ Hannum, who completed two passes for 22 yards and added 37 rushing yards, also ran in a conversion attempt. Landmark led the offense with 61 rushing yards and also caught both passes for 22 yards, and Ryan Payeur had 5 rushing yards.

Kaden James had eight tackles and forced three fumbles, and Levi Pickert had an interception and made a tackle. Harry LaFlamme, Garrett Dredge and Payeur each finished with four tackles, Julian Rodriguez made three tackles, Zack Haskell and Hannum each had two tackles, and Delaney Fifield had one tackle.

Frontier Juniors fall

Ludlow’s defense held Frontier scoreless in overtime and scored a touchdown of its own to take a 20-14 victory in SL Junior Division play Saturday in South Deerfield.

Frontier scored the first and final touchdowns in regulation, while Ludlow scored twice in between as the teams played to a 14-14 tie in regulation to force OT.

Golf

Two Man Scramble

Dave Donoghue and Jeremiah Bayer shot a 125 to win the Arnie Flight during the two-day Two Man Scramble Championship over the weekend at the Country Club of Greenfield.

Jason Kelton and Tom Herzig tied Cam Merrigan and Rob Haigh for second in the flight with a 130.

Josh Harker and Patrick Merrigan won low net with a 118. Three teams — Brian Luippold and Mark Kennedy, Chuck Yetter and Dan Gavin, and Joe Golonka and Terry Blanchard — finished tied for second at 121.

Dan Majewski and Matt Pitoniak won low gross in the Palmer Flight with a 140, while Justin Wiernasz and Kevin O’Connell were second at 144. Cliff Porter and Dave Perlmutter tied Ike Purington and Patrick Varner for third at 145.

Garcy Stacy and Scott Stacy won low net with a 117. Andy Wroblewski and Tristan Ward were second at 119, and Chuck O’Connell and Dick Peel were third with a 124.
