SUNDERLAND — The Board of Selectmen have declared 120 North Main St. surplus property, clearing the way to receive proposals from developers who want to build an affordable housing development there.
The selectmen’s vote follows last month’s special town meeting, during which the public voted to, as Selectman Scott Bergeron explained, allow the board to declare the land surplus and sell it.
Chairman Tom Fydenkevez said the strong public showing at the meeting was “a reaffirmation that we’re heading in the right path.” He said although it has taken two years to get to the point with the property the town is at now, the process has steadily moved forward.
Bergeron said he wanted to make sure the public understood that the board’s move isn’t the final say they’ll have in the matter.
“It’s a matter of enticing the largest pool possible,” Bergeron continued. After proposals come in following the request for proposals, he added that it will be “a very community based process.”
