Franklin County Technical School surrendered an own goal and had a goal disallowed but still managed to pull out a 1-1 draw with McCann Technical School in Tri-County League North boys’ soccer action Thursday in North Adams.

McCann had taken the lead on an own goal in the 47th minute, then dodged a bullet about 10 mintues later when the Eagles scored but it was called back due to an offsides call.

Jovanni Ruggiano finally got Franklin Tech on the board in the 65th minute with an assist from Rueben Galvez.

“I’m pleased with (the result),” said Eagles head coach Kurt Richardson. “It was our best game by far this year as far as passing and ball control is concerned.”

McCann held the edge in shots, 12-7.

Grayson Funk rejected a half-dozen shots for Franklin Tech. Nico Moreno made 3 saves for the Hornets.

Franklin Tech (3-4-2, 1-2-1 TCL North) travels to Westfield Monday to face Nashoba Valley Technical High School at 4 p.m.

Monson 3, Frontier 2 — Frontier Regional School put forth a solid effort against traditional power Monson High School but the Mustangs walked away with a 3-2 independent boys’ soccer win Thursday at Granite Valley Middle School in Monson.

Kyle Monaghan scored the only goal of the first half for Monson (5-3-0) in the 23rd minute, assisted by Ryan Monaghan.

The Mustangs made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute on Michael Murphys’ goal from Jadon Messina.

Frontier closed the gap to 2-1 in the 64th minute when Ethan LaFleur booted home an unassisted goal, but Monson struck 4 minutes later on Murphy’s second goal of the contest. Kyle Monaghan had the assist.

Zach Hamilton’s unassisted tally in the 71st minute cut the deficit to 3-2. Then he nearly tied it with 30 seconds left but his shot hit the crossbar.

Monson outshot Frontier 19-9. Michael Tranghese made 4 saves for the Mustangs. Peter Bronke had 11 stops for the Red Hawks.

Sci-Tech 3, Greenfield 1 — Jaret Bermudez was all the offense Springfield School of Science & Technology needed as he netted a hat trick in a 3-1 independent boys’ soccer win over Greenfield High School Thursday in Greenfield.

The Green Wave got on the board first in the 12th minute, courtesy of an own goal. Bermudez struck for two goals before halftime to give the CyberCats a 2-1 lead, then he added an insurance marker midway through the second half.

Wilmer Lopez made 3 save in net for Sci-Tech, which held a slim 5-4 edge in shots. Hunter Campbell made 2 saves for Greenfield.

Gateway 3, Pioneer 1 — Nick Cooper scored once in each half and Gateway Regional High School defeated Pioneer Valley Regional School, 3-1, in an independent boys’ soccer game Thursday night in Northfield.

Cooper scored the lone goal of the first half on an assist from Conner Glebocki, and Glebocki scored the first goal of the second half on an assist from Cooper. Gateway went up 3-0 on Cooper’s second of the day on an assist from Evan Lee.

Jack Loud got Pioneer on the board on an assist from Jordan Loughman.

Shane Mastello made five saves to pick up the victory. Ryan Underwood stopped nine shots in the loss.

Granby 6, Mahar 0 — Joe Desormier’s hat trick powered Granby High School to a 6-0 independent win over Mahar Regional School in boys’ soccer action Thursday at the Woodward Complex in Orange.

Daylon Congo added a pair of tallies and Corey Hinckley also scored for the Rams, who led 3-0 at intermission.

Granby outhsot the Senators, 15-7.

Zach Gorman had 5 saves and Ryan Walz 2added 2 stops for the Rams. Bryce Cleveland made 4 stops and Alex Gurganus turned aside 5 for Mahar, which hosts Renaissance School on Monday.

Renaissance 5, Mohawk 0 — Eamonn Mahoney scored twice Thursday and Renaissance School defeated Mohawk Trail Regional High School, 5-0, in an independent boys’ soccer game in Buckland.

Akmed Davis-Moore gave Renaissance a 1-0 lead in the first half, and Mahoney scored later in the frame for a 2-0 lead. Mahoney and Tsenu Erkailo scored 30 seconds apart in the 70th minute of the second half, and Dominic Cirelli closed out the scoring in the 77th minute. Kyle Kalin made three saves to earn the shutout.

Wyatt Bandy-Page stopped 14 shots in defeat.

Southwick 5, Athol 0 — Brandon Castor and Jared O’Connor each scored twice Thursday as Southwick-Tolland Regional High School defeated Athol High School, 5-0, in an independent boys’ soccer match in Southwick.

Castor assisted on the three goals he did not score, giving him a hand in all five Southwick goals. Mike Sheil had one goal. Nicholas Doyle and Mason Kowal each had an assist.

Colby Mason stopped 12 shots in the loss.

Girls’ match

Athol 3, Smith Academy 1 — Shelby Mailloux had one goal in each half and Athol High School earned a 3-1 win over Smith Academy in an independent girls’ soccer game Thursday in Athol.

Mailloux scored on an assist from Amber Mahoney in the 10th minute to give the Red Raiders (3-6-1) the lead and Mahoney then finished off a pass from eighth-grader Ally Raymond just after the midway point of the first half for a 2-0 lead.

Smith Academy came back in the 38th minute with a goal off the foot of Maggie Hession, who scored on a direct kick to cut the deficit in half at the break.

The score remained 2-1 in favor of Athol throughout much of the second half until Mailloux iced the victory with her second of the day in the 75th minute, with Mahoney picking up her second assist of the day, giving her a three-point performance.

“We are not putting a lot of points on the board but Shelby and Amber are two veteran players who know how to get things done,” Athol coach Tim Cleveland said.

The Athol coach also said that he hopes his team can be more competitive against league opponents during the second half of the season.

“I would really like us to play good soccer and put up a fight,” he explained. “If we can go out and play good soccer in the second half of the season, and be competitive, I will be happy moving forward.”

Peyton Parker made six saves in the win. Gabby Tisdale stopped eight shots for Smith Academy.
