Frontier Regional School all but wrapped up the Pioneer Valley North Division boys’ cross country title Tuesday afternoon thanks to a huge effort from its top three runners.
Carsten Carey, Alex Sharp and Brandyn Robinson finished first, second and third to pace the Red Hawks to a crucial 22-35 victory over Mohawk Trail Regional High School in South Deerfield.
The squads entered the day as the only two remaining unbeaten teams in the North and the Red Hawks had already beaten the third-place team — Greenfield High School — this season. It’s conceivable but unlikely that Frontier could still lose a divisional meet.
Frontier also defeated Hampshire Regional High School (16-45) and Mahar Regional School (17-44) on the day to make it a clean sweep and move to 7-0. Mohawk defeated both Hampshire (18-37) and Mahar (21-34) to finish 2-1 on the day. Mahar and Hampshire did not score against each other.
The fact that there were two other teams on hand made it even more remarkable that the top three finishers in the 2.75-mile race were all from Frontier. Carey finished in 15 minutes, 19 seconds to win by 21 seconds, before Sharp (15:40) and Robinson (15:51) came in behind him.
Frontier also had Ben Litskoski finish eighth overall in 16:35, and Aaron Dorshow take 11th overall in 16:48.
Mahar’s Ash Shaw was fourth overall in 16:06, and Mohawk then began to get runners in as Luke Viens (16:12), Seth Hoynoski (16:13) and Zach Coburn (16:23) finished fifth through seventh. Brian Allen also took 10th overall in 16:42.
“Both teams bring out the best in each other,” Frontier coach Bob Smith said. “Both teams knew how important this meet was for the league. They both went out and wanted to own it.”
Greenfield 16, Granby 46
Greenfield 15, McCann 50
Greenfield 19, Palmer 41 — Greenfield High School placed four of the first five runners Tuesday afternoon and swept a quad meet at host McCann Technical High School on the shores of Windsor Lake in North Adams.
Greenfield defeated McCann Tech (15-50), Granby High School (16-46) and Palmer High School (19-41).
Isaiah Morrison won the 2.7-mile race for the Green Wave (6-1) with a time of 17:24, continuing his string of early-season wins. Teammate Henry Howe came in second at 17:34.
Palmer’s Dominic Leonard was third in 18:14, and the Wave came back with two more runners in Tyssen LaBombard (18:23) and Matteo Velez (18:28). Greenfield had two more runners in the top 10: Dylan Badillo, who placed seventh in 20:10; and David Giurgiu, who placed 10th in 20:25.
FC Tech 19, St. Mary 40
FC Tech 28, Gateway 28 — Sohan Tyner sprinted across the finish line in 18:24 Tuesday and helped lead Franklin County Technical School to its first win of the season, 19-40 over St. Mary’s High School in a North Division boys’ cross country meet in Huntington.
The Eagles (1-3-1) also ran against host Gateway Regional High School and picked up a 28-28 tie.
Tyner led the Eagles with the victory but teammates Scott Martin (20:31) and Martin Given (21:16) came in fifth and sixth overall to help the cause. Freshman Brody Church also had a nice day with an 11th-place time of 24:08.
Mohawk 17, Frontier 38
Mohawk 27, Hampshire 30
Hampshire 15, Frontier 50 — Meghan Davis and the Wells’ sisters continued their impressive seasons Tuesday afternoon and Mohawk continued to dominate because of it with a pair of girls’ cross country wins in South Deerfield.
The Warriors defeated reigning state qualifier Hampshire, 27-30, and also beat North Division rival Frontier, 17-38.
Davis won the 2.75-mile race in 16:35, while Jackie Wells was second in 16:46, and Lilly Wells was third in 17:02. Davis would have tied for eighth overall in the boys’ race, which featured four teams, while Jackie Wells would have finished 11th.
“The Mohawk top three just looked sensational,” Frontier coach Bob Smith said.
Tyler Rice finished ninth overall for Mohawk in 20:19.
Frontier, which suffered a 15-50 loss to Hampshire, was led by Fiona Ferry, who finished 13th in 20:32.
Greenfield 15, Granby 47
