BERNARDSTON — Ever wonder about all those stone walls that run through our landscape?

The Bernardston Historical Society will offer answers with a special program on Monday.

The program, called “Discovering New England Stone Walls” with Kevin Gardner, will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Powers Institute Senior Center, and is free and open to the public, although donations are invited.

Gardner is a master stonemason who has spent more than 40 years building and restoring stone walls throughout New England.

Gardner, who hails from New Hampshire, says the seemingly simple stacking of stones can be a long and deliberate process. While there have been reports of about 250,000 miles of stone walls in this country, the actual number of miles remains unknown, he said.

He uses a bucket of small stones to demonstrate the building process as he delivers his talk.
