TURNERS FALLS — To help people protect their identities, Greenfield Savings Bank is holding a “Shred Fest,” a document shredding event, today from 9 a.m. to noon at its Turners Falls branch, located at 282 Avenue A.

According to a bank press release, it is not illegal to rummage through curbside trash, making it crucial to shred documents containing personal identity or account information.

“Document shredding is an essential step for everyone to take to protect themselves from identity theft,” said Karen Cartier, fraud prevention officer at Greenfield Savings Bank. “Fraudsters can use almost anything that contains your ID to steal your identity such as account statements, credit applications and receipts.”

The free shredding event is open to the public, and individuals can bring up to three shopping bags of documents to be shredded. In addition to the shredding service, Cartier will provide information about fraud prevention.
