Mohawk Trail Regional High School caught a few early breaks, Greenfield High School had a few bounces go its way late and the outcome was a 2-2 McGrath Division North boys’ soccer draw Thursday afternoon in Buckland.
The Warriors benefited from an own goal in the 19th minute to grab a 1-0 lead, then Aidan Sandvik netted an unassisted marker in the 56th minute to double their advantage.
The Green Wave picked up its attack and scored twice in a five-minute span to pull even. Asier Areta booted home an unassisted goal in the 65th minute, then he set up John Diaz’s equalizer in the 70th minute.
Mohawk (0-2-1, 0-1-1 North) held a slim 17-16 edge in shots.
Wyatt Bandy-Page rejected 14 shots in the Warriors, net, while Hunter Campbell turned aside 15 in the Green Wave goal.
“Greenfield played well,” offered Mohawk head coach Larry Poirier. “This could have been anybody’s game. There were enough chances for both teams to put that game away.
“I’m happy with the progress our newer players are making, they’re improving every day,” added Poirier.
Putnam 5, FC Tech 0 — Nicholas Jacobs scored a natural hat trick to power Putnam Vocational High School over Franklin County Technical School, 5-0, in Tri-County League boys’ soccer play Thursday at Hubbard Field in Indian Orchard.
The Beavers (2-2-0, 1-0-0 North) got on the board by virtue of an own goal in the fifth minute, then Jacobs scored the next three — two before halftime and one after intermission.
Surra Bangura added a goal later in the second period.
Luis Soto was called upon for 1 save to record the shutout for Putnam, which outshot Franklin Tech 14-6.
Grayson Funk made 2 stops and Dan Cloutier added 3 saves for the Eagles.
Granby 6, Athol 0 — Summer Molin registered a hat trick to power Granby High School to a 6-0 win over Athol High School in a Pioneer North Division girls’ soccer match Thursday evening at O’Brien Field in Athol.
Molin, Kayleigh Croteau and Nora Young all scored first-half goals for the defending western Mass. Division III-champion Rams (2-1-0, 2-0-0 Pioneer North).
Molin added two more and Young added her second during the final 40 minutes.
Granby held a 19-4 advantage in shots. Brooklyn Baran made 1 save to register the shutout, while Peyton Parker had 7 stops for the Red Raiders.
Athol (0-2-1, 0-2-0) hosts South Hadley High School Saturday at noon.
Frontier 4, Pioneer 0 — Natalie Denkiewicz scored twice to help Frontier Regional School blank Pioneer Valley Regional School, 4-0, in an independent girls’ soccer match Thursday in Northfield.
Lilly Haley scored 10 minutes to put the Red Hawks up 1-0, assisted by Katie Thompson. Angela Self’s unassisted tally in the 27th minute made it 2-0, and Denkiewicz converted a pass from Sarah Meunier in the 33rd minute to extend the lead to 3-0 at halftime.
Denkiewicz closed out the scoring with her unassisted tally in the 51st minute.
Frontier (2-2-0) outshot the Panthers, 27-4.
Leah Fuess played well in net for Pioneer (1-3-0), making 15 saves.
“We played an exceptional second half. I was very happy,” said Panthers head coach Nikki Pullen. “I did expect to see more intensity from the first half. We played really smart, we just need to execute. … Leah had some incredible saves.”
Four Rivers 7, Charlemont 1 — Lyra Macek fired home three goals and assisted on two others as Four Rivers Charter School downed the Academy at Charlemont, 7-1, in a River Valley Athletic League girls’ soccer match Thursday in Greenfield.
Kin Wildman-Hanlon netted a pair of goals and Sophie Garbus and Anna Goldstein also had a marker for the Otters, who led 5-1 at halftime.
Teagan Cardaropoli made 3 saves to earn the win in goal.
