Dana McRae had two first-half goals and Pioneer Valley Regional School went on to defeat Mohawk Trail Regional High School, 6-0, in a McGrath North Division boys’ soccer game Monday night in Northfield.

McRae finished with four points, as he also assisted on two goals for the Panthers, who built a 4-0 lead at the break.

DaShawn Sadri opened the scoring on an assist by Nate Mousseau and McRae made it 2-0 with an unassisted tally. Jordan Loughman then scored on McRae’s first assist of the night, and McRae got his second of the night on an assist from Jack Loud to put the Panthers ahead 4-0 at the break.

Tristan Orloski and Ryan Underwood each scored in the second half to complete the scoring.

Michael Menard and Joel Emberley led the Pioneer defense, and Underwood made three saves to earn the shutout.

Athol 3, Mahar 2 — Anthony Negron scored on a nice individual effort with 1 minute, 30 seconds left in the game and Athol High School defeated Mahar Regional School, 3-2, in an independent boys’ soccer game Monday night at O’Brien Field in Athol.

The game was not only between the longtime rivals but was also a rematch of last year’s WMass Division III Boys’ Soccer Tournament first-round game. That game went to penalty kicks after being tied at 2-2 and the Senators were able to advance. While both teams lost a number of seniors from that game, Athol coach Dave King said it was nice to get a little revenge.

“Both teams lost a lot of players, and both are playing a lot of freshmen as well, but even with that, there are still a lot of players who experienced that game, so it’s nice to get the win,” King said.

King was even happier considering how displeased he was with his team following a season-opening tie against Hopkins Academy last week.

“I would have been much more comfortable and more content with how we played today even if we had tied,” King said. “The growth we saw today was great. That’s what you are looking for as a coach.”

Mahar (2-1) took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the game when a ball was played into the Athol box. Red Raider goalie Colby Mason came out and collided with Mahar forward Matt Jenks, but Jenks stayed with the play and scored. The score remained that way until four minutes remained in the first half when Negron received a pass from Justin Blake at the top of the box and beat Mahar goalie Bryce Cleveland for his first of the night.

Just over one minute later Negron struck again on nearly an identical play, this time after receiving a pass from Hayden Herk 25 yards away from the Mahar goal. He beat his defenders and ripped a shot from the top of the box for his second of the day.

Mahar tied the score midway through the second half when it was awarded a free kick that Jamie Temple booted in. Mason and Cleveland each made five saves in their respective nets.

Frontier 5, Sabis 0 — Frontier Regional School used balance on offense to shut out Sabis International Charter School, 5-0, in Schmid Division boys’ soccer action Monday at Herlihy Park in Whately.

Dan Bronke fired home the first Red Hawks goal in the second minute, assisted by Ethan LaFleur. Ben Arnold upped the lead to 2-0 with his marker from Alex Gheorghita in the 14th minute.

Zach Hamilton’s unassited tally in the 20th minute made it 3-0, and Tyler Mayrand converted a pass from Noah Jacques in the 32nd minute gave the Hawks a 4-0 by halftime.

Ethan LaFleur netted the final goal, assisted by Mayrand, in the 73rd minute.

“I really like our possession game. We pretty much controlled the game,” said Frontier head coach Dale Totman. “Our passing and our movement off the ball was great. It’s hard for a defense to key on anyone because we have a bunch of players who can score.”

Frontier outshot the Bulldogs, 20-3. Peter Bronke made only 2 saves but had to make a diving save with 10 minutes remaining to preserve the shutout.

Shane Audet recorded 11 saves for Sabis.

Frontier (2-0-0, 2-0-0) hosts Belchertown High School Friday night at 7 p.m.

FC Tech 5, Ware 3 — Bryce Hill’s first career goal with nine minutes remaining snapped a 3-3 tie and Franklin County Technical School went on to defeat Ware High School, 5-3, in an independent boys’ soccer match Monday in Turners Falls.

Jovanni Ruggiano booted home a pass from Joel Farrick in the eighth minute and scored unassisted in the 12th minute to stake the hosts to a 2-0 lead.

The Indians’ James Andrews cut the deficit to 2-1 with his penalty kick goal in the 21st minute, but Reuben Galvez responded in the 29th minute with his marker from Ryan Campbell.

Brandon Sawabi’s goal closed the gap for Ware right before the half, assisted by Leon Gaumond.

Andrews’ unassisted goal with 19 minutes left tied it at 3-3, but Hill put the Eagles ahead to stay and Campbell scored two minutes later for the insurance tally. Farrick assisted in both goals.

Grayson Funk made 8 saves in goal for the Eagles, who outshot Ware 17-13.

Brian Simons had 9 stops for the Indians.

Franklin Tech (1-1-1) hosts Mohawk Trail Regional High School Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
