GREENFIELD — The local chapter of a national mental illness advocacy organization will hold a series of classes beginning Thursday on how people can more effectively support loved ones with mental health issues.

The classes, hosted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, begin at 6 p.m. at Baystate Franklin Medical Center.

It’s open to the public, with advanced registration, and will cover topics such as schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and panic disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder.

“The course is taught by trained local NAMI family member volunteers who know what it’s like to have a loved one struggling with a mental illness,” said Bernice Drumheller, the local chapter’s president. “This is the first time we have been able to offer this course in the Greenfield area.”
